Monnie Thompson McKiver celebrated a milestone when she turned 100 on Sunday! She was feted by family and friends with a birthday party on Saturday.
When asked to what she credits her longevity, McKiver said, “Serving the Lord, treating everybody right, and helping my neighbors.”
At her birthday party, friends and family gathered as well as members of her church. McKiver also said that she was visited by members of First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown. She said she was visited by friends she hadn’t seen in years.
McKiver was married to James “Sweet” McKiver and they had two daughters. She said they started married life living in a one room house but through hard work and perseverance, things improved.
She said she worked with two generations of the Steve and Walter Campbell families.
McKiver said growing up, her father worked for a share cropper named Ed Priest. She said she had lived and worked on a farm her entire life. She said Mr. Priest would take care of her and her family when times were hard.
McKiver said she was born one of 14 children and is the last of her siblings still living. She has resided in Elizabethtown her entire life and is currently a resident at the Elizabethtown Nursing Center.
“I hope to get better soon,” said McKiver. “Everyone has been so nice.”
