The Toys for Tots campaign is gearing up again this year to help make Christmas a little brighter for children in Bladen County. Many in Bladen County are still dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Florence, which includes the Bladen County Toys for Tots Director, Beverly Rogers.
Although Ms. Rogers’ home was severely damaged due to the flood she is not letting it stop her from the volunteer program to help children have a brighter Christmas. Rogers said the decision to assist Toys for Tots once more was an easy one to make.
Toys for Tots is a program organized by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks, according to their website.
The Bladen County Toys for Tots will be accepting applications for assistance on Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Bladenboro Church of God located at 701 N. Seaboard Street in Bladenboro.
Rogers said the sign-up is for Bladen County residents only. Guardians must have identification and must bring the Medicaid card and social security number for each child they have custody of to enroll them in the program.
“If they don’t have the proper information with them, they will be instructed what to bring back,” said Rogers. She added anyone who needed to submit additional information will be allowed to do so.
She said all information submitted on the application will be checked and verified.
“I’m all about people and helping people. I just love it,” Mrs. Rogers continued.
BladenOnline.com staff members and Mrs. Rogers have been working to ensure children will have a brighter Christmas this year by placing Toys for Tots drop boxes at various locations throughout Bladen County to collect toy donations.
