Moments after East Bladen’s Eagles suffered a heart-breaking 42-41 loss Friday night in the Class 2A Football Eastern Semi-finals at South Columbus High School, the Eagles returned to their locker room to find out they had been dealt another blow – all of their personal possessions that had been left in the locker room had been stolen.
“They got us pretty good,” said East Bladen Principal Dr. Jason Wray. “Cash, cell phones, laptops, tennis shoes and clothing items.”
Bladen County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor said that as of 4:30 Monday the value of the items stolen was estimated to be $2,638. “This kind of stuff happens all of the time,” he added.
Dr. Wray said that a police report had been filed with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department.
East Bladen Football Coach Robby Priest said that once his kids went onto the field to start the game that they did not return to the locker room until the end of the game. “We didn’t go back to the locker room at halftime,” he said.
Coach Priest also noted, “Whoever did it took the time to go through every bag and every pants pocket. This was not a 2-minute job.”
“We had one player who works part-time who had just picked up his paycheck and cashed it before leaving for the game,” said Coach Priest. “They took it all (about $220).”
Dr. Wray said, “Members of the East Bladen community are already stepping up with a fund-raiser to help the players recoup their losses.” The Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church is accepting donations for the football players on their website www.etownpresby.org.?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss When making the donation designate that it is for East Bladen Football.
