Last week I had a lot of resting and thinking to do. Time to reflect is always time well spent, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment. I wanted to share some of the things I pondered about and some of the things that made me smile.
Last week was a very busy news week. When you are sick or not healthy, it is amazing how much you seem to miss. It broke my heart to hear about all the shootings around our nation, to hear about the mother who was arrested after her child drown at White Lake. It seems our nation is under attack and we need to make some big changes or it will only get worse.
I smiled when I saw all the flags at half-staff round our county. It allowed us the chance to show we are a nation that stands together and show that we too felt the loss suffered in TN. I watched this video, http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/story/29609247/marine-funeral?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss, from Fox News and teared up. I’m thinking and praying for the families of the victims of the shootings and wondering, how can I make a difference? How can I help change things?
Last week also started a new school year for some Bladen County students because the Columbus County Charter School is a year-round school. My two boys started 2nd and 7th grade. I can’t believe how time passes by so quickly. Nothing will warm a mother’s heart faster than the smiles on her children’s faces.
I have been cheering for our many athletes in Bladen County from home. Our church softball teams have been playing hard this weekend and spreading the love of God in their own way. I’m proud of all the players.
I wanted to go check out the Cheerleading Camp this past week, but I wasn’t able to make it. I use to be a cheerleader. I really appreciate our cheerleaders because I know; cheerleaders can make a difference and work very hard at their sport.
How about our West Bladen Pre-Major’s Baseball team playing like champs in the World Series? I love seeing all the photos. I hope these young men are having the time of their lives. One of our talented writers found Scorecast, which is a really neat way to watch the game. If you haven’t checked it out, take a look at it when West Bladen plays again at 2 pm and 8 pm today.
Our thoughtful ball players on the West Bladen team dedicated their game Saturday to Ayven Lennon, a precious Bladenboro resident who has been battling cancer and winning. There is a fundraiser this coming Saturday, August 1st at the Bladenboro Historical Building for Ayven. I am looking forward to seeing everyone come out in support of Ayven. It is going to be a lot of fun for the whole family.
Another item that made me smile this week was seeing Miss Hayley Hall win the title of Miss Princess of North Carolina. I have known Hayley since she was a pre-teen. She has always been a special person, beautiful inside and out and very talented. She is on a mission now to help Victory Junction Camp. You can read all about her efforts in our article, “Our New Miss Princess of NC, is on a mission”. She is making Bladen County proud.
I have been thinking… I know that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but stealing is illegal and has been against the law since law was established. Someone that hates you usually hates you for one of three reasons. They either see you as a threat, they hate themselves, or they want to be you. The best way to handle it is to smile, be grateful for what you have, stand up for what you believe in and don’t let anyone slow you down.
The 2nd Summer Concert at the Cape Fear Farmer’s Market in Elizabethtown was this past Thursday. It looked like a lot of fun. Susan Yerry’s photos really captured the spirit. I hope I can dance and enjoy the fun at the next Summer Concert Series that will be Thursday, August 13th with the “Fantastic Shakers”.
Last but not least, “You are my sunshine”, has always been one of my favorite songs. This week, while I have been dealing with health issues and trying to take it easy, I have watched this “Little Sunshine” and every time I watch her video, I smile so big my face hurts. I am so grateful for my God, all the doctors, nurses, family and friends who have been my “sunshine”.
Peace and love,
Char
