Thoughts While Shaving

Monday began as a rainy cold day and eventually became a beautiful day with lots of sunshine.  At the Hester household, we received slightly less than a quarter of an inch of rain.

Looking forward to the Pork and Beats Festival, first ever scheduled for Saturday, November 18 from 10 AM to 8 PM at Cape Fear Farmers Market, in E-town.

East Bladen High School football season continues Friday evening.  The Eagles next opponent will be Greene Central.  Gametime, 7:30 PM.  It’s a home game for East Bladen.  Another great season for Coach Robby Priests’ team.

White Lake Fire Department is having a Thanksgiving fundraiser.  Fried turkey, baked turkey or Boston Butt, cooked and ready to be served for just $30.  Call 910-874-0726 for details.

One of many such events in the county.

I hope you check our Events page daily.  So much happening weekly, monthly in Bladen County, and we may not have it all, but all we know about.  Send your announcement to bladenonline.com@gmail.com.

We (BladenOnline) recorded another good week, not a record breaker as we have over the past couple of months, but very good.

Christmas is just over a month away, but many folks have been preparing all year for a special Christmas mission project. Bladen and Columbus County citizens have been plugging away to spread the love with Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.

Fellowship Bible Church is a Central Drop Off site for Operation Christmas Child. Pat Warrick, the local Coordinator for the mission work, and Lynn Ransom, helping with Church Relations, assist with the mission in Bladen and Columbus Counties. Warwick explained the boxes are not only collected by churches.

Boy Scouts, non-profit groups, organizations and businesses help every year with this non-denominational mission to spread the Word and Love using gift giving and prayer. The boxes contain gifts for boys and girls from ages 2 years old up to 14 years old.Image may be NSFW.

Last year over 11,400 boxes were collected in Bladen County adding to the over 11 million total collected last year. Marie Jackson, another volunteer with Operation Christmas Child in Bladen County, said we hope to at least collect as many boxes as we did last year. “We have already started collecting items for next year’s boxes,” Marie added.

Monday, November 13th, was the first day for collecting the containers packed with care in the two counties. Time to pack the boxes and have them dropped off in time for this year’s shipment is drawing to a close, but there is still time to donate to the cause.Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

If you would like to pack a box, visit https://www.samaritanspurse.?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss org/what-we-do/operation- christmas-child/, for information on how to pack the box. Then, drop your newly packed box off at a church participating in the operation or at our local Central Drop Off site, Fellowship Bible Church. The church is located at 2503 Waddell Drive in Elizabethtown.

The collections will be held from November 13th until November 19th. The volunteers will be available to collect the boxes Monday through Friday 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Saturday 10 am -1 pm and Sunday 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Will Bladen and Columbus County collect over 11,000 Christmas boxes this year? We will let you know after all the boxes have been collected next week.

Holiday shopping has started for some people. This Friday, November 17th,
East Bladen High School will hold a Holiday Bazaar.

“We are scheduled to open doors as 4:00 pm and go until 7:00 pm in the East Bladen atrium,” Mrs. Sunday Allen, a teacher at the school said.

“This should work out great for shoppers who want to get to the football game, too,” Allen added.

Allen explained, Ms. Crystal Johnson and Ms. Monica Sykes (front office staff) have put this event together as a way to offer our stakeholder community an opportunity to shop locally as we enter the holiday season.

“We are not charging vendors or shoppers this first year but we would love to see this become something that would generate funds to support our EBHS community in some way. We have over 25 vendors scheduled to attend with a variety of wares to offer. Think of this as a mini- Holly Day Fair.” Allen said.

East Bladen High School is located at: 5600 NC-87, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.

Tillis, Senators Announce Bipartisan Agreement on Economic Growth Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and other senators announced a bipartisan agreement on legislative proposals to improve our nation’s financial regulatory framework and promote economic growth. Last spring, the Banking Committee issued a request for legislative proposals from stakeholders, companies, and consumers aimed at creating economic growth. The Committee subsequently held a series of hearings exploring the proposals, and has been negotiating and drafting a reform package since that time.

The agreement includes measures from Committee members on both sides of the aisle and stakeholders. Legislative text is in the process of being finalized and will be released upon completion.

“The bipartisan agreement the Banking Committee was able to reach is the result when members check their ideology at the door and work to together to produce meaningful legislation that helps everyday Americans, something that needs to happen far more often,” said Senator Tillis. “Over the last three years, I have heard from financial institutions across North Carolina about the impact of burdensome regulations, which has restricted access to capital for Americans all across the country. Dodd-Frank’s harmful one-size-fits-all model has proven to be a failure, and this legislation will help ensure farmers, small-business owners, and first-time home buyers have the resources they need to allow our economy to thrive again. I applaud Chairman Crapo and my colleagues in the Banking Committee for coming together to reach this agreement.”

“A strong and vibrant economy is important for American consumers, businesses, and the stability of the financial sector,” said Chairman Crapo. “The bipartisan proposals on which we have agreed will significantly improve our financial regulatory framework and foster economic growth by right-sizing regulation, particularly for smaller financial institutions and community banks. I thank all of the senators who have joined with us to move this forward, and look forward to continuing our work to achieve a robust, bipartisan legislative product.”

The package is targeted toward helping community banks, credit unions, mid-sized banks, regional banks and custody banks. It includes important consumer protections, particularly for veterans, senior citizens and victims of fraud.

Joining Senators Tillis and Crapo are Senators Bob Corker (R-Tennessee), Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota), David Perdue (R-Georgia), John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana), Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota), Jon Tester (D-Montana), Mark Warner (D-Virginia), Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), Angus King (I-Maine), Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri), and Gary Peters (D-Michigan).

Highlights of the agreed-upon package include:

*Improves consumer access to mortgage credit;

*Provides regulatory relief for small financial institutions and protects consumer access to credit;

*Provides specific protections for veterans, consumers and homeowners; and

*Tailors regulations for banks to better reflect their business models.

The Bladenboro Town Board met on Monday night and voted to send the First Baptist Church, located on Martin Luther King Drive, a bill for $3,660 for the paving and sewer connection fees for the addition to the church.  Town Commissioners Cris Harrelson, Patsy Callahan and Sarah Jane Benson were not in attendance at the meeting.

Members of the church had addressed the board during the October meeting requesting the charge be waived.

Bladenboro Town Commissioner Billy Ray Benson said a letter was sent to the church notifying them it was not up to them to pave and repair the street following the completion of the sewer work. Town Commissioner Benson explained the church’s responsibility begins at their property line.

“This was a miscommunication with them,” said Town Commissioner Benson.

Town Commissioner Gene Norton said, “I think all of this should not be at the board level. It should have been settled at the office level.”

He also said he would like for Mayor Rufus Duckworth to write a letter of apology for not responding the church’s initial letter to the town regarding the matter.

In other business, the board voted unanimously to approve the purchase of four blue plastic trash cans for the downtown area.

* Following a closed session for personnel matters, the board voted to hire two new employees. The board voted to hire Jonathan Stubbs for the General Maintenance position. His salary will be $21,484. The board also hired David Edwards for the position of Water Lineman contingent on him earning the Grade 1 Wastewater certification by June 30, 2018. Edwards’ salary will be $24,901.

*The board also heard from auditor Bryon Scott, with Thompson, Price, Scott & Adams, regarding the town’s audit report. Scott told the board there are some dead water meters which is translating into potential lost revenues for the town. Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

“We did find some accounts where the meters readings are wrong. That is possible lost revenue for the town,” said Scott.

He also told the board he rendered an “unmodified opinion” which is the highest and best opinion a town or government entity can receive.

Scott told the board their tax collection rate is at 93.5 percent which is slightly below the state average of 97 percent.

*Don White, with Boost the Boro, thanked the board for their assistance in making the BeastFest a continued success. He estimated there were between 7,000 to 8,000 visitors to the festival. White shared some of the comments received by Boost the Boro regarding the festival.

*Dr. Robert Heavenridge also addressed the board requesting the town to consider paving Edwards Avenue. He reported the street to be in poor condition and said he owns two houses on the street.

Robert Hester, Founder of BladenOnline.com
A birthday only comes once a year. Today, gives us the opportunity to celebrate someone who has made BladenOnline.com possible along with many other things in Bladen County and North Carolina.

Today, November 14th, Mr. Robert G. Hester turns 79 years young. This gentleman is not one for fancy titles or recognition, but he is one of the most deserving of praise.

Our business of reporting the news, sports, advertising and more happening in Bladen County would not be in existence if it were not for this hard working, caring man.

His wit still inspires us and keeps us up-to-date in his daily “Thoughts While Shaving”. A lot of progress made in Bladen County came with help from this patient, dedicated soul.

Hester was an award winning Bladen County Commissioner, and a successful business owner. He has and continues to give his time and talent to so many boards and committees they are too numerous to mention.

We could go on and on about the many wonderful qualities we are grateful for in Mr. Robert G. Hester, but we know he doesn’t like the spotlight. Therefore on this day, full of celebration for such a great man, we wish Mr. Robert G. Hester a very Happy Birthday!

Cheers to you, keep on shaving, rgh.

State issues notice of violation to Chemours

By Erin Smith

The North Carolina Department of Water Quality has issued a notice of violation to Chemours regarding an unreported chemical spill of dimer acid fluoride.

You can read the notice in its entirety here: https://files.nc.gov/ncdeq/GenX/NOV%20deq%20chemours%20112017.pdf?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss

State officials have given Chemours 10 days to submit a report about the spill, the quantity of chemicals spilled and the types of any other chemicals spilled.

DEQ received notification in November from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding elevated levels of the chemical GenX in the Cape Fear River near the outfall line for the Chemours Fayetteville plant.
“It is both unlawful and unacceptable for a company to fail to report a chemical spill to the state and public as soon as possible,” said Michael Regan, Secretary for the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. “We will take all appropriate enforcement action to hold Chemours accountable for failing to comply with its permit.”
By state law, Chemours must be provided an opportunity to respond to a notice of violation before a civil penalty can be assessed. DEQ will review the company’s response and any additional information the company submits before determining further enforcement.
