School Bus Driver Appreciation Week Is Feb. 12-16

School bus drivers across North Carolina will bask in well-earned attention next week during School Bus Driver Appreciation Week, as individual schools and districts recognize drivers’ key role with various events and celebrations. Nationally, February is Love the Bus month, aimed to raise awareness and appreciation for the safe experience of riding the bus to and from school.

Dozens of events are planned for this week across the state to honor drivers, from sit-down breakfasts to offerings of student-made valentines. Loyd E. Auman Elementary School in Cumberland County is organizing an ’80s flashback dance party at Seventy-First High School on Feb. 16 for all bus drivers in the school district. South Greenville Elementary School in Pitt County has scheduled an entire lineup of daily events starting Monday, when each bus driver will receive a bag of M&M’s with a note saying, “Thanks for Driving Miles & Miles.” In Craven County, Oaks Road Elementary School will be highlighting drivers on social media with shout outs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

State Superintendent Mark Johnson will join the festivities Monday morning with Pitt County Schools, where he’ll attend a breakfast at H.B. Sugg & Sam D. Bundy Elementary Schools in Farmville.  Later that morning he’ll travel to Johnston County to greet students and bus drivers at Johnston County Early College Academy in Smithfield. On Thursday morning, he’ll join Wake County students riding their bus to Rogers Lane Elementary in Raleigh.

Additional details about these activities and many others planned across the state can be found on the 2018 Love the Bus Event listing.

More than North Carolina 750,000 students board over 13,000 school buses each day. Their drivers must complete rigorous training and be certified to drive a bus.

Kevin Harrison, transportation services section chief for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, said the state’s bus drivers earn the week of recognition every day of the school year.

“School bus drivers are entrusted with a great responsibility: to safely transport our children to and from school each day,” Harrison said. “To do this, they must drive their students, watch out for them, listen to them and teach them. We ask so much of bus drivers every day. I hope that all students, parents and staff will take a moment to express their appreciation for the many things their bus drivers do.”

Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed Feb. 12-16 as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in North Carolina, and urges all school communities to take a moment to thank bus drivers for their service.

The Love the Bus program, launched in 2007 and coordinated by the American School Bus Council, is not only a way to raise awareness and appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of school bus drivers nationwide, but also provides an opportunity for parents and children to learn more about the safety and environmental benefits of school bus transportation.

Students nationwide are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely if they take the school bus instead of traveling by car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In addition, school buses reduce traffic by keeping more than 17 million cars off roads each year, the American School Bus Council says, while also saving approximately 2.6 billion gallons of fuel.

Parents, teachers and children are encouraged to visit the American School Bus Council’s website to share stories about their favorite bus drivers and find a variety of other resources for honoring drivers.

Thoughts While ShavingThe busiest place in the county today may be the Bladen County Board of Elections.  Filing for  political office begins at 12 noon.  Check BladenOnline often for updates over the next few days.  Filing period ends February 28.

Thinking about the Bladen County Commissioners call for a public hearing to be held Monday, February 19 at 6:30 p.m. ‘seeking input regarding a possible law making it illegal to hunt or discharge a firearm on, from, or across a state maintained right-of-way or to retrieve dogs from a public road while in possession of a loaded firearm’ is likely to draw a crowd.  May need to make sure someone has a key to the ‘big courtroom’ to accommodate all who want to be heard, pro and con.

A Casino Night Fundraiser is planned for Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery, sponsored by Bladen’s Bloomin’ Agri-Industrial, Inc. and Bladen County Committee of 100.  Doors open at 7 p.m.  Play time is from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 person.

Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, lest you forget!  A box of candy and a card may not work this time.

Rep. Brenden Jones Comments on GOP Class Size Funding Initiative

$

Rep. Brenden Jones

North Carolina Republican lawmakers yesterday introduced comprehensive reform and funding for smaller class sizes with House Bill 90. In 1995 the General Assembly passed legislation that changed the classroom allotment of teachers into a single category for determining allotment throughout K-12. House Bill 90 will reintroduce a new category for K-5 Program Enhancement teachers that exists separately from the classroom teacher allotment. By creating this new category additional positions are secured and smaller class sizes will be achieved.

House Bill 90 appropriates more than $61 million to fill this need, and will be phased in over the next four fiscal years as school districts prepare for the new allotment.

“This is an exciting step forward for education in our region. By ensuring that we have funding for more educators and resources we are providing students with more time for personal instruction from their teachers,” Rep. Brenden Jones said. “A strong education program is one of the fundamental parts of growing our community and I look forward to its passage next week.”

RALEIGH – The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Robert J. Higdon, Jr., announced that today in federal court, Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III sentenced Jermaine Dale Rogers, 39, of Wilmington, to 210 months of imprisonment followed by 6 years of supervised release.

Rogers was named in an indictment filed on July 19, 2017.  On October 25, 2017, Rogers pled guilty to distribution of a quantity of heroin.

In February 2017, a confidential informant (informant) advised law enforcement in New Hanover County that Rogers was actively selling heroin.  At the time, Rogers was residing in a federal halfway house in Wilmington following his release from the Bureau of Prisons.  The informant admitted to purchasing two clips or two grams of heroin from Rogers approximately 15 times over the course of three months.  In April 2017, under the direction of law enforcement, the informant made arrangements to conduct a controlled purchase of heroin from Rogers. On April 18, 2017, the informant purchased approximately 2 grams of heroin from Rogers in exchange for $600 in United States currency.

On June 21, 2017, Rogers was subsequently arrested and the defendant admitted to selling heroin to the confidential informant.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI conducted the criminal investigation of this case.  Assistant United States Attorney Bradford Knott handled the prosecution of this case for the government. At the sentencing, Judge Dever highlighted, among other reasons, Rogers’ persistent involvement in drug trafficking as a motivating factor for the sentence imposed.

The Bladen County Grand Jury indicted a former Bladenboro town manager on Monday morning. The  indictment comes following a State Bureau of Investigation probe of Delane Jackson, who resigned from his post in 2013.

Jackson will face one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses in excess of $100,000. The SBI probe involved a company called Cygnus to which Jackson is alleged to have ties. The company was contracted by the town to perform work at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

Jackson is represented by Attorney Butch Pope of Whiteville.
