Brief recap of yesterday’s big sporting events…

NASCAR top 3 in Texas:
1. Kevin Harvick
2. Aric Almirola
3. Daniel Suarez

Last night NFL action … Baltimore Ravens (6-2) 37 – New England Patriots (8-1) 20.

Tonight, Cowboys vs Giants.

Much discussion recently about Daylight Saving Time. It began years ago as a way to cut energy use. … There are efforts to eliminate changing the clock a couple of times annually. Time will tell…

Recently, there was recognition of the STS 66 mission to outer space, actually the 25th anniversary. One on board was Curt Brown Jr. of Elizabethtown, N.C. That was one of a half dozen or so that Brown was onboard. The STS 66 mission conducted several studies on the sun’s energy and how it affects the earth’s climate and environment. Curt logged a total of 1,383 hours in outer space in the ’90s. Curt returned to Bladen County for years promoting education and awarding a scholarship to students.

Thinking about Curt and his family. His dad owned and operated Western Auto Store for years in downtown Elizabethtown. … Western Auto went the way of Kmart and so many other retail chains…

Basketball is moving to the forefront at the high school and college level. NBA must play year round.

A special event at 5 p.m. today at the county recreation site near the NC Patrol station on US 701. A road into the county recreation site will be named in honor of Robert Mazur. Robert retired over the past year or so, maybe longer. He was in charge of many projects for the county, including constant upgrades at the park. Very deserving…

Bladen County Commissioners meeting at 6:30 p.m. today. It is open to the public…

Weather is great … for this time of year. Today’s forecast … Increasing clouds, high mid 60s. Tonight, a slight chance of rain, low in low 50s. Tuesday’s forecast … a slight chance of showers, mostly cloudy, low in the low 50s. A little of what you hoped for in July and August when it was so hot.

Municipal elections tomorrow (Tuesday).

3 reason to love November…
Sweater/scarf/hat/boot season is in full swing. You’ve been dying to show off.
The leaves begin to turn…
In some way, shape or form, you get to vote.

Canvass for November’s election is scheduled for Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Board of Elections.

Registered voters can see if they have an election in which they are eligible to vote and view their sample ballot and Election Day polling place by using the Voter Search Tool.

Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, urged all eligible voters who did not vote early to cast their ballot on Tuesday.

“Municipal elections have a tremendous impact on our everyday lives,” Brinson Bell said. “Those elected on Tuesday make decisions about our police and fire services, parks, water systems, sidewalks and more. Yet municipal elections often have low voter participation, meaning these races are often decided by slim margins.”

The State Board of Elections offers the following 9 tips for Election Day voters:

  1. Registered voters who reside in a municipality with elections may vote on Election Day. To find out if you are eligible and to view a sample ballot, go to the State Board’s Voter Lookup tool here: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss.
  2. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to cast a ballot.
  3. Find your Election Day polling place here: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/PPLkup/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss
  4. Same-day voter registration is not available on Election Day.
  5. Voters who need assistance or accommodations at the polls must request it. Individuals who are unable to enter the polling place may vote curbside.
  6. Voter photo identification is not required in any North Carolina election in 2019. It will be required to vote in 2020, with exceptions.
  7. If you present to vote and your name is not on the voter list, you may request a provisional ballot. No voter will be turned away.
  8. The State Board asks that all voters respect the right of others to participate in the election. Intimidating any voter is a crime. Voters who feel harassed or intimidated should notify an election official immediately.
  9. Election results will begin posting after 7:30 p.m. on the State Board website here: https://er.ncsbe.gov/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss

Quick action by Karen Suggs is expected to save the lives of many animals in Bladen County.

The Bladen Animal Shelter has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Petco Foundation, it was announced Monday night at the Bladen County commissioner’s meeting.

Suggs, who is the supervisor of the county shelter, learned about the pet supply company’s program and immediately filled out an application. Three days later, she learned that Bladen County had received the grant.

Bladen County commissioners recognized Suggs during its regularly scheduled meeting in the Bladen County Courthouse. She was presented with a plague and a bonus check by Chairman Charles Ray Peterson.

“It will benefit all of the animals,” Suggs said. “It will give us a separate area for the puppies away from the other dogs. It will give us a quarantine area.”

Bladen County Animal Shelter is an open door facility that provides shelter and care to stray and surrendered animals. It’s located at 506 Smith Circle in Elizabethtown next to the Powell-Melvin Agricultural Center. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m. The phone number is 910-862-6918.

“The quarantine area will help decrease the length of time that dogs stay in the shelter due to illness and decreases the number of dogs euthanized due to illness,” Bladen County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Terri Duncan said. “The ultimate goal is to have happier, healthier dogs become ready for adoption quicker.

“We are grateful to the Petco Foundation for the monies provided, and especially to Karen Suggs, who took the initiative to apply for the grant and whose passion for the animals is evident each and every day in her work.”

Since 2010, the live release rate has increased by 7% at the shelter, according to Bladen County Animal Control.

“I can honestly say that I love my job,” Suggs said. “You have to love your job in the animal control field or you don’t need to be there. I have a wonderful staff, co-workers, boss, and I’m just very grateful.”

Commissioners approved $7,300 to hire part-time help at the shelter.

The Petcom Foundation has awarded more than $250 million since 1999 through its grant program.

Bladen Commissioners Approve Inmate Housing Programs

Bladen County commissioners on Monday approved an agreement with the U.S. Marshal’s Office to house up to 50 federal inmates at the Bladen County Detention Center and gave permission for the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office to work with the N.C. Juvenile Justice System to house more juveniles charged with crimes.

Commissioners held their regularly scheduled semimonthly meeting in the Bladen County Courthouse.

North Carolina’s “Raise the Age” law takes affect Dec. 1. The law, passed in 2017 as part of the Juvenile Justice Reinvestment Act, will raise the age of criminal responsibility in most cases from 16 to 18. The change in law has left the state seeking ways to house most 16- and 17-year-olds arrested beginning Dec. 1 in juvenile centers without building new facilities.

Jim Speight (pictured above, center) of the N.C. Juvenile Justice System explained the program to the board. Juveniles are held for a limited time while awaiting the next step in their case, he said. Bladen County will be paid $244 per day per non-Bladen County detainee for use of the facility. The payment for a Bladen County person will be $122 per day per person.

Sheriff Jim McVicker told the board that some minor work will need to be done at the detention center such as adding fencing and pod work in order to keep the juveniles separated from the adult population.

McVicker also said the Sheriff’s Office would have to hire additional staff and each deputy would have to undergo up to four weeks of training to work in the juvenile wing. The state would pay for the training. McVicker said the county plans to house up to 21 juveniles. McVicker hoped to begin housing juveniles by March.

U.S. Marshal Mike East, right, addresses the Bladen County Board of Commissioners on Monday as Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker listens.

U.S. Marshal Mike East met with the board regarding the Federal Inmate Housing Program. The U.S. government will pay Bladen County $75 per day to house federal inmates. McVicker said Bladen County plans to house 40 male and 10 female federal inmates at the outset of the program in three to four weeks.

“By doing this, we’re helping the feds out, we’re helping the state out and bringing revenue into Bladen County,” McVicker said after addressing the commissioners.

McVicker said that prior to the opening of the new detention facility two years ago that Bladen County was spending $96,000 per year to have inmates housed at out-of-county facilities. Today, McVicker said, the Bladen facility is housing inmates from Pender, Duplin and Halfax counties.

In other matters, the board,

** Adopted resolutions requesting Morganwood Estates Drive, Old Hickory Lane, Westwood Drive and Westwood Circle be added to the state-maintained secondary road system.

** Declined a $6,000 bid for county-owned property at 2555 Bladen Union Church Road.

** Approved a month-to-month lease agreement with Horne, LLP.

** Approved required forms and documentation regarding a CDBG-DR Grant Award related to a Bladenboro drainage study.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level assembly room of the Bladen County Courthouse.

It’s Election Day 2019 for municipalities throughout the area. The day you make choices about those who will be leaders in local government. Lots of local interest in some towns, very little in others so far as early voting is concerned. 742 early voters in Elizabethtown, 124 in Bladenboro … next high is Clarkton with 23. … See our news article ‘Bladen County Board of Elections announces total votes so far in the municipal elections’. Bladenboro voters will also be making decisions about the sale of alcoholic beverages in the town.

Bladen County commissioners held a special ceremony at the county recreation park Monday to name a road in honor of Robert Mazur, a long time, recently retired employee who spent many hours working to upgrade the area. Just one of his many accomplishments.

Interesting reading recently … quoting former President Jimmy Carter, who celebrated his 95th birthday October 1 to become the oldest living former president. … He was told in 2015 his cancer had spread to his brain. “I assumed, naturally, that I was going to die quickly. I prayed about it. I didn’t ask God to let me live. I ask God to give me proper attitude toward death and I found that I was absolutely and completely at ease with death.” 95 years old and still attempting to rehab houses for folks in need.

Pray for our nation and all our leaders.

Late night football results … Cowboys 37 – Giants 18.

If you don’t vote today, don’t complain about results…

“We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” Thomas Jefferson

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” Abraham Lincoln

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King
