Black History Month Celebrated Through the Years

Contributed by Bladen County Commissioner Arthur Bullock
No history of the United States of America can be said to reflect the true story of America, that does not include the contributions made by people of color.  Despite the fact that legalized slavery and segregation marred much of the first two centuries of the American story, African Americans overcame barriers of poverty, racial prejudice, inequality and, in many cases, brutal suppression to add to the political, artistic, athletic, scientific… and all aspects of the growth of America as a country.

The first national Black History Month was established in 1976 by President Gerald R. Ford, of Michigan.  The month has origins that go back to 1915 with the establishment of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. In 1926, the organization sponsored the first national Negro History Week.

The idea caught on, and was celebrated through the United States, inspiring schools and communities to hold celebrations, performances and lectures, and create history clubs. Yearly proclamation of Negro History Week came from cities around the country in the following decades.

In the 1960s, the week-long celebration grew to Black History Month.

Ford was the first president to recognize Black History Month in 1976.  He called upon U.S. citizens to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

African American Barack Hussein Obama II became the 44th President of the United States. https://en.wikipedia.?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rssorg/wiki/Barack_Obama

The theme for 2020 Black History Month is “African Americans and the Vote.

A former union president is sentenced for embezzlement, a new business incubator officially opens in Elizabethtown and a school gym is named for a retired basketball coach who won a lot of games in the facility.

Those were some of the top stories in Bladen County for the week of January 26-February 1, 2020.

Former United Food and Commercial Workers Local Union 1208 president Keith Alan Ludlum, 48, of Bladenboro was sentenced to a combined 10 years in prison, fined $10,000 and ordered to pay restitution January 28 after pleading guilty to conspiracy and embezzlement of labor union assests, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

An audit and investigation found that between January 2012 and March 2015 Ludlum and former union secretary/treasurer Terry Slaughter embezzled and misused more than $200,000 in union funds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

On January 29, the Elizabethtown Small Business Incubator had its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting celebration. The incubator is located in the former Elizabethtown Post Office at 207 E. Broad Street. There are four tenants in the newly renovated building.

Sam Boger won a lot of games and a state championship while serving as basketball coach at East Bladen High School in the 1970s and 1980s. On January 29, the facility where he spent much of his time was renamed Samuel C. Boger Gymnasium. The school now is Elizabethtown Middle School.

Boger’s Cougars won the 1984 3-A state championship and he was named conference coach of the year 16 times.

In other news,

Bladen County native Dana Melvin Mills (pictured, left) has been hired as Bladen County Schools’ director of Career and Technical Education. She will replace Willa Dean Williams, who is retiring March 1.

Bladen County Health Education Travis Greer resigned to take a position with Cumberland County Department of Public Health.

Elizabethtown Police Sergeants Roger Thomas David and Willie James Thompson Jr. received their Criminal Investigation Certificates for completing investigative training in order to be better prepared for the rigors and challenges of criminal investigation.

In sports,

East Bladen’s Gabe Barber (pictured, left) was selected to play in the East-West All-Star soccer game in Greensboro in July. He is the first Eagle and first Bladen County player to be selected to play in the game.

It’s been tough seasons for the East Bladen and West Bladen boys’ basketball teams. They have a combined 8-29 record. The schools played Jan. 27 and East Bladen came away with a 60-41 win.

The girls teams for each school have fared much better. East Bladen is second in the Three Rivers Conference and West Bladen is third. East Bladen won the first game between the teams this season 45-35.

Cody Butler of Elizabethtown signed to play baseball at North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount next season. He is a senior at Harrells Christian Academy.

Enjoy the week ahead.

After months of campaigning in Iowa, voters will have their say this week. … Since 1976, winning in Iowa does not guarantee a win in November for the candidates…

Winners, but eventual losers include…
Republicans…

’96 Bob Dole
’08 Mike Huckabee
’12 Rick Santorum
’16 Ted Cruz

Democrats who won Iowa but were eventual losers…
’84 Walter Mondale

’04 John Kerry
’16 Hillary Clinton

Would bet the Republican winner in Iowa this year will be Donald Trump. … No bets on the Democratic side…

NC primary moved up to March, when we should see winners of the first wave of states, come for a visit…

First things first. … Enjoy today’s Super Bowl…

DUE WEST, SC – West Bladen grad Trevor Lesane batted 4-for-7, scored 3 runs and drove in 3 as his Erskine Flying Feet split a non-conference season-opening double-header with Lander Saturday.

Lesane walked and scored a run in the second-inning of Erskine’s 7-6 victory in the opener. The Tar Heel native knocked in Jaisen Randolph with a single to ignite the Flying Feet’s 4-run winning rally in the 9th inning. Lesane later scored the second run of the inning.

Lander won the nightcap 17-6. Lesane stole a base and scored a run in the first inning. The senior outfielder slammed a 2-run double in the fifth inning that scored Shawn Knox and Greg Sanders.

The Flying Feet will travel to Lander Monday.
