Law Enforcement Annex Opens in Kelly

The Opening Ceremony for the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Annex in Kelly was held Monday afternoon, October 7 in Kelly.  The annex is located in the old post office now owned by Centerville Baptist Church.  The building had recently been owned by the Bob Mitchell family and given to Centerville Baptist Church.

Approximatley 50 people from area law enforcement agencies and citizens of the Kelly area attended the event. Sheriff Jim McVicker, County Manager Greg Martin, County Commissioners Chairman Charles Ray Peterson, Billy Barker, Assistant to Congressman David Rouzer, Centerville Baptist Church Pastor Allen Murray and Chairman of Deacons Jeff Huff were some of the officials in attendance.

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, The North Carolina Highway Patrol, and The North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement Division will utilize the substation while working in the Kelly area.

“If a citizen has a deer wreck and needs to meet with a State Trooper, instead of driving to Elizabethtown, the Trooper can meet the citizen at the annex.  If one of our deputies needs to meet with a citizen of Kelly, it can be done at the annex instead of the citizen driving to Elizabethtown,” said Sheriff Jim McVicker.

The vision of having a law enforcement annex in Kelly was an idea of the citizens in Kelly.  “We reached out to Jeff Huff of Centerville Baptist Church and found out that they might be willing to allow us to use the building for a law enforcement annex.  After hearing back from Jeff that the church was in favor of allowing us to use the building, we began putting together our resources to renovate the building along with Centerville Baptist Church”, said Sheriff McVicker.

Inmates and staff from the Bladen County Jail and Sheriff’s Office were used to paint, replace flooring, window casings and clean up around the building.

“We are very fortunate for the law enforcement relationship that we have here in Bladen County and our Troopers look forward to utilizing this facility when in the Kelly area”, said Captain Chris Morton, Troop B Commander  of the  State Highway Patrol out of  Fayetteville.

Thoughts While Shaving for October 9

Yesterday’s news from White Lake … so sad. Actually drove by shortly before the accident and back by on the way home. Saw numerous blue lights and red lights, no idea someone had lost their life. … Sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. See the article on our news page.

Stock market is up and down, more down than up recently. Not that I am a wealthy individual, but 401Ks and other types of savings tend to drop faster than they rise. … Whatever the cause, hopefully it will stabilize soon.

Hasn’t been that long ago when unemployment rate was high, folks were looking for a job, complaining about no industry. Now, industry officials are complaining about a lack of workers. … Good jobs are available in Bladen County and hopefully more are on the way. … Unemployment rate in the 5% range.

Many farmers have gathered their corn crop … production down due to dry weather in the spring. Peanuts are being harvested now and cotton is next. My guess is this is a good year to have crop insurance … especially for corn growers.

Happy I ‘flushed’ my system of politics, years ago. It’s a different world … both parties. Need a huge tent over DC, maybe 3 tents … like 3 ring circus.

Locally, good football weather. Bladen County high school football teams are not enjoying one of their better seasons, but, still time to ‘turn it around.’

It’s a good day to enjoy fish and Shriners in Bladenboro and Elizabethtown have plates for sale today. Proceeds benefit projects such as Shriner’s Children hospitals.

Weather forecast. … Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. North wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. No rain expected over the next 7 days. … I agree … much needed.

Some folks walk in the rain, others had rather jump in the puddles.

Sometimes YOU win, Sometimes YOU lose, Sometimes it RAINS.

Some people run from the rain, but sit in bathtubs full of water.

Part 7 Series: 6 ways to help people with disabilities reach their employment goals

$
0
0

“On paper, North Carolina appears to offer a robust system of employment services. In reality, parents, advocates, and people with disabilities struggle to make informed choices because they are either not aware of the full array of services available to them or are misinformed about the services,” according to a report for an overview of Employment Services for people in North Carolina.

The report adds, “As a result, individuals with disabilities frequently end up without services or with services that do not effectively assist them in reaching their employment goals.”

This report attempts to help close the information gap by providing an overview of the employment services available in North Carolina and offer suggestions on how to improve existing employment services by proposing how they should evolve.

Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and Division of Services for the Blind (DSB)

The VR and DSB programs provide goods and services to help people with disabilities get jobs and support themselves. The programs are housed within the State Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and have local and regional offices throughout the State. The agencies provide a broad array of services that may include college and professional training, job-development, rehabilitation, job coaching services, and other services needed to eliminate barriers to employment. VR and DSB often contract with providers of work training that are known as Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs). Any job pursued with the help of VR or DSB must pay at least a minimum wage and be in a workplace that includes coworkers without disabilities. North Carolina has no waitlist for the VR program at this time.

Student Employment Services

Students with disabilities receiving special education services under an Individual Education Plan (IEP) are entitled to transition services from the school beginning at the age of 14 until graduation from high school. All students with disabilities are also entitled to pre-employment transition services (administered by VR) between and including the ages of 14-21, whether they are in high school or higher education at the time. These services include paid work experiences, internships, apprenticeships, self-advocacy training, and other activities that prepare young adults to successfully transition to life after high school.

Local Management Entities/Managed Care Organizations (MCOs)

These organizations (currently Trillium Health Resources, Cardinal Innovations, Alliance Behavioral Healthcare, Vaya Health, Partners Behavioral Health, Sandhills Center, and Eastpointe) manage both state-funded and Medicaid-funded behavioral health services under contracts with DHHS. Included in the services they manage are employment training services such as Adult Developmental Vocational Program (ADVP), Supported Employment (SE), Long-Term Vocational Supports (LTVS), and Individual Placement and Support (IPS). SE, LTVS, and IPS are community-based services and have varying eligibility requirements.

NC Works Career Centers (Workforce Development Centers)

NC Works Career Centers are part of the Department of Commerce. They help job seekers (not only individuals with disabilities) learn about available jobs, look for work, participate in training and education programs, and access the internet and NCWorks job database. Additionally, targeted services are available to individuals with disabilities ages 14-24.

Employment Networks (EN)

Employment Networks receive funding from the Social Security Administration to provide employment services to people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). ENs may be non-profits, for-profits, or state agencies. An employment provider could be a CRP and an EN – meaning they offer employment services under a contract with VR and under a contract with Social Security Administration – at the same time.

The North Carolina Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Program

The goal of the WIPA program is to enable beneficiaries to receive accurate information about the advantages and effects of work on their Social Security benefits. In North Carolina, ServiceSource assists beneficiaries in the eastern part of the State, and VR assists in the western part of the State.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, state election officials will randomly select a statistically significant number of precincts, early voting sites, and mail ballots from the October 8 municipal elections to be counted by hand.

This “hand-eye” audit is required by statute and helps ensure the reliability of election results tabulated by machine.

The random selection process can be viewed by the public via a webinar hosted here. The State Board of Elections office conducts a number of additional post-election audits and investigations, where necessary, to ensure the integrity of election results.

FAYETTEVILLE – Oct. 8, 2019 – The clock is ticking for early entry into this year’s Cape Fear Valley Diabetes Games.

Early registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 18. Cost is $15 per child athlete. Late registration will then be held through Friday, Nov. 1. Late entry cost is $25 per child athlete. The games will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Methodist University.

Now in its second year, the Diabetes Games was created to allow diabetic youths from across the state to show their athletic prowess through safe and organized competition. The games include a mix of traditional track and field events with more modern competitions, such as obstacle course runs and bounce ball jousting.

Last year’s Diabetes Games allowed several children to experience the thrill of competition for the first time. Diabetic children often refrain from competitive sports due to their condition.

Once considered rare, type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions among U.S. adults, and now children are following suit. Studies show the condition has grown more than 20 percent among youths, age 10 to 19, between 2001 to 2009.
