Two high interest cases involving Delane Jackson and MacKenzie Brisson continued to new dates

By Charlotte Smith

This week there were two court cases of interest on the docket for Bladen County Superior Court. The two defendants, Delane Jackson and MacKenzie Brisson had court scheduled this Monday, October 7th. The two are totally different cases, but many are asking what has happened with both cases.

Delane Jackson

Delane Jackson, a former Bladenboro Town Manager case was continued to Monday, February 17, 2020 according to Assistant District Attorney Quintin McGee.

“Hopefully everything will be taken care of with this case the week of February 17th,” Mr. McGee said.

Mr. Jackson is charged with one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses. According to records while Mr. Jackson served as the Town Manager for Bladenboro, he also served as President of a company by the name of Cygnus.

The Town of Bladenboro paid Cygnus, almost $500,000 for operation of wells and spray irrigation over the course of Mr. Jackson’s tenure as Town Manager. Bladenboro Mayor Rufus Duckworth found documents listing Mr. Jackson’s aunt as the secretary and a former town clerk under Mr. Jackson, Lisa Kelly Porter, as an officer of Cygnus. In 2013, after Mayor Rufus’ findings, Mr. Jackson was asked to resign as town manager for Bladenboro.

In 2014, Mayor Duckworth reported his findings to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), which lead to Mr. Jackson’s arrest.

Mr. Jackson maintains his innocence according to reports. The former mayor of Bladenboro and the Town Council knew of Mr. Jackson’s involvement with Cygnus and he had recused himself during the voting process about services Cygnus had proposed to offer the town, according to a public statement given by Mr. Jackson. He added, Cygnus was the lowest bidder and the town commissioners voted to approve the contract unanimously.

Since 2014, Mr. Jackson has held the position as Town Manager of River Bend, NC.

His case has been continued numerous times, according to court documents. Mr. Jackson is represented by Attorney Harold “Butch” Pope.

The other case of interest readers continue to ask about involves MacKenzie Brisson of Dublin. Mr. Brisson was involved in a 6-hour standoff with law enforcement. He is charged with three felony counts of assault with a firearm on a government official.

Mr. Brisson stood trial with Judge Michael A. Stone presiding over the case back in August of this year. The unique case has no historical example with similar happenings according to both the defense attorney and the district attorney.  Mr. Brisson is alleged to have barricaded himself inside a home on Paul Brisson Road in Dublin while shooting at law enforcement officers. No one was injured and the standoff ended peacefully.

The defendant has a privately retained lawyer. During his trial trail Mr. Brisson was also represented by Mr. Pope and the case ended in a mistrial.

Mr. McGee confirmed Mr. Brisson retained a new lawyer after the mistrial. Due to the new attorney and the process it involves when a defendant hires a new attorney the case was continued to November 4, 2019. Mr. Brisson’s new attorney is Kevin Marcilliat from Wilmington, NC.

ST. PAULS – Freshman Malcolm Bolden fired in the deciding goal with under 10 minutes left to play that lifted East Bladen to a 2-1 Three Rivers Conference boys’ soccer victory over St. Pauls.

With the win the Eagles opened up a 2-game lead over the Bulldogs and Whiteville in the TRC standings. East Bladen is 8-0 in league play and 9-3-1 overall.

An early East Bladen goal was nullified by an offside call, and St. Pauls appeared to be offsides on their first goal but the officials ruled that play could continue since the Eagles played the ball to the offsides player.

The Eagles tied the game 1-1 when senior Gabe Barber hurled a throw-in to senior Jay McGill who knocked the shot past the keeper.

“I thought we had the better run of play in both halves, but they battled and never quit,” said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. “Things didn’t go right from the start, but I thought we handled every bit of adversity the way we should.”

The Eagles lost goalie Jacob Priest when he collided with a Bulldog player. “It was a pretty nasty collision,” noted Raynor. “Jacob hit hard and injured his lower back.”

Senior Angel Martinez replaced Priest in goal for the Eagles. “There was some rust there, but Angel stepped up and looked good in goal,” said Raynor.

“Malcolm’s goal was a very similar situation as their goal,” stated Raynor. “Malcolm was in an offside position and their defender played the ball which allowed the play to continue and Malcolm put it away.”

“It was a relief to finally put the goal away,” said Raynor. “You could feel that the goal was coming but not sure when. We kept the ball in their half of the field for the majority of the second half but couldn’t break through.”

Raynor felt that the Eagles left a lot of opportunities and goals on the field. “We weren’t as sharp on the ball as we have been, mostly due to their pressure and how they were playing us. We won throw-in after throw-in that we put in the box but couldn’t finish.”

“Jake (Evans) had a heck of game tonight,” continued Raynor. “He was a difference maker. Getting Jay McGill back was huge for us. He came in and played some big minutes for us.”

Raynor added, “Gabe had a solid game but definitely a great second half. His throw-in is a heck of a weapon to have and generated us quite a bit of offense. Drew (Sholar) and Malcolm did a great job on the right flank and whipping balls in the box.”

East Bladen will travel to South Columbus on Monday for a 5 p.m. game.

For Appalachian State football fans … ASU 17 – Louisiana-Lafayette 7.
NFL Thursday night action, NY Giants at Patriots.

Recently had the opportunity to visit Southeastern Carolina Crossroads … again. Never cease to be amazed.

For those that may not know about Crossroads, it is a faith based rehab center for males who are addicted to alcohol or drugs or both and, for many, they have ‘hit the bottom’ and are hopeful of returning to a normal lifestyle. (There is a program for females, but not at Crossroads, and operated by a different organization).

Rev. Kincy Barrow is the Executive Director of Crossroads, in addition to serving as pastor at Whites Creek Baptist Church.

Crossroads is governed by a Board of Directors. The have a capacity of 24, 20 seeking help and 4 who are leaders, all former addicts who stay on for a short time to assist newcomers. Some require a few days longer. Some go home, return to their old environment and need more help. Many just need a hand, they graduate, re-enter society and are productive citizens, again.

Any male is eligible to attend (depending on space), the curriculum is 6 weeks long. All are assigned a task when they arrive, some are cooks, some clean the inside, some the outside, some may have a special skill and most likely can use it at the Crossroads. … All attend classes several hours a day and are required to adhere to the rules. All are asked for $s to help pay their cost, but, folks at the Crossroads understand some are ‘flat broke’ and have hit ‘rock bottom’ and just need help, Arrangements are made to accept all, none are turned away because of finances.

As stated earlier, Crossroads is faith based, not eligible for any support from government. … They must raise their funds. Support comes from individuals, churches, various area organizations, and from whatever resources the individual patients can afford, if anything.

They welcome resources, money, new or used clothing, but cash is best. They are invited to area churches from time to time, many of the attendees are anxious to share their testimonies.

Want to know more, want to support their cause, call the office at 910-549-8487 or email secarolinacrossroads@gmail.com. They are located at 1086 Susie Sand Hill Road, Elizabethtown, NC.

I may have shared more than I should have. No one asked me to share anything, but it’s a story that needs to be told, again and again.

Patrols To Increase During ‘Operation Crash Reduction’ Weekend

The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program and law enforcement officers are urging people to buckle up during one of the deadliest weekends for travelers.

From Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct. 14, law enforcement agencies across North Carolina will be increasing patrols, looking for impaired drivers, speeders and checking for seat belt usage.

It’s all part of the first “Operation Crash Reduction,” a campaign with a simple goal — to save lives.

“This operation will save lives,” said Mark Ezzell, director of the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “We can all feel better knowing that law enforcement is helping make our roads safer through this statewide campaign.

The weekend leading up to Columbus Day has the second highest total number of fatal crashes among all holidays, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). In fact, Columbus Day weekend trails only Independence Day for the number of fatal crashes.

In October, an increasing number of drivers are on the road for festivals, football games, fairs and other fall activities, and more driving appears to mean more motor vehicle crashes, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

North Carolina and our neighbors are particularly dangerous for travelers. The Southeast typically records more fatalities than other regions. Of the 3,330 fatal crashes in the Southeast between 2013 and 2017, one-third involved unbelted occupants.

“We know that speed, distraction, and impairment are the root causes of most crashes, and people are more likely to die in crashes when they aren’t buckled,” Ezzell said. “So, we are asking the public to be mindful of their driving behaviors and the dangers that could await them this weekend.”

“Seatbelt safety is a cultural issue and we need every person who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle to understand that driving safely could mean saving their own lives and those around them,” Ezzell said.

GHSP funds efforts to reduce traffic crashes in North Carolina and promotes highway safety awareness through a variety of grants and safe-driving initiatives like Click It or Ticket, Booze It & Lose It?, BikeSafe NC, Watch For Me NC and Speed a Little. Lose a Lot.

Beware of the Grandparent Scam

$

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Jim McVicker is advising everyone to be aware of the “grandparent scam” that is going around Bladen County.

“We have seen a rise in this type of scam and are asking the public to be aware of this scam and to contact the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office before you send money to anyone,”  said Sheriff McVicker.

Beware if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member and needing money.

According to the Federal Trade Commission this is how the call may go:

You get a call from someone pretending to be your grandchild.  The person explains that they are in trouble, with a story about being in an accident, in jail, in the hospital or stuck in a foreign country and they need your help.

The caller adds enough details about how, what or where the emergency happened to make the story seem plausible.  The caller may even sound like your grandson or granddaughter.  Often the caller tells you that a third person, such as a lawyer, doctor or police officer, will “explain everything to you” if you call him or her. This financial ruse has been making the rounds in various incarnations for years.

In 2017 nearly one in five people reported losing money in an impostor scheme like the grandparent scam, amounting to a loss of $328 million, according to the FTC. And those ages 70 and older have suffered the highest average losses.

“The scammers are very convincing and usually have some correct information that leads you to believe that the story is truthful.  They use your emotions about wanting to help your grandchild against you,” said Sheriff Jim McVicker.

Anyone that suspects a grandparent scam or any other type of scam is asked to contact the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office before giving any money to the caller.

“We can help you verify if the call is real or not,” said Sheriff McVicker.

Toys for Tots campaign gearing up, sign up in Bladenboro

The Toys for Tots campaign is gearing up again this year to help make Christmas a little brighter for children in Bladen County. Many in Bladen County are still dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Florence, which includes the Bladen County Toys for Tots Director, Beverly Rogers.

Although Ms. Rogers’ home was severely damaged due to the flood she is not letting it stop her from the volunteer program to help children have a brighter Christmas. Rogers said the decision to assist Toys for Tots once more was an easy one to make.

Toys for Tots is a program organized by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks, according to their website.

The Bladen County Toys for Tots will be accepting applications for assistance on Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Bladenboro Church of God located at 701 N. Seaboard Street in Bladenboro.

Rogers said the sign-up is for Bladen County residents only. Guardians must have identification and must bring the Medicaid card and social security number for each child they have custody of to enroll them in the program.

“If they don’t have the proper information with them, they will be instructed what to bring back,” said Rogers. She added anyone who needed to submit additional information will be allowed to do so.

She said all information submitted on the application will be checked and verified.

“I’m all about people and helping people. I just love it,” Mrs. Rogers continued.

BladenOnline.com staff members and Mrs. Rogers have been working to ensure children will have a brighter Christmas this year by placing Toys for Tots drop boxes at various locations throughout Bladen County to collect toy donations.

To help with the Toys for Tots campaign in the mother county you may drop off a new, unwrapped toy in the Toys for Tots box at one of the drop off locations listed below:

*Bladen County Public Libraries will be collecting at each of their branches starting on Monday, October 21 because they are currently collecting blankets  and sleeping bags for Roger’s Wish.

*Cape Fear Heating & Cooling, LLC located at 8849 US Hwy. 701 South, Clarkton.

*CresCom Bank located at 201 W. Broad Street, Elizabethtown.

*Lu Mil Vineyard located at 438 Suggs-Taylor Road, Elizabethtown.

*The Rent-A-Center located at 1311 West Broad Street in Elizabethtown.

*The Division on Aging located at 608 McLeod Street in Elizabethtown.

*The Senior Center in Bladenboro.

If you would like to be added to one of the locations to have a Toys for Tots donation box placed in your business you can do so by calling Mrs. Rogers at 910-633-5070 or BladenOnline.com at 910-879-1029.

Bladenboro voters to decide on malt beverages, unfortified wine sales

By Charlotte Smith

Voters in the town of Bladenboro will not only be voting to elect who will represent them on the town board during this Municipal Election. Although the current Town Council of Bladenboro voted against offering a controversial referenda on the ballot, a petition with over 400 signatures made a place for the two alcohol issues.

The two questions added to the ballot will be deciding whether to allow the sale of malt beverages and unfortified wine. According to H. Blake Proctor, Town Manager of Bladenboro the town council voted back in the summer unanimously not to allow the referenda on the ballot.

However, the petition passed around the town garnered enough support from Bladenboro residents to allow the referenda.

The ballot reads:

Malt Beverage Election
To permit the “on-premises” sale only of malt beverages. For or Against
To permit the “off-premises” sale only of malt beverages. For or Against

Unfortified Wine Election
To permit the “on-premises” sale only of unfortified wine. For or Against
To permit the “off-premises” sale only of unfortified wine. For or Against

“I found out about it this weekend. I don’t drink, but its up to the citizens of the town,” Mayor Rufus Duckworth stated.

Mr. Rodney Storms, a Bladenboro resident was the citizen asking for the controversial referenda to be added to the ballot back in the summer, according to Mayor Duckworth.

Mayor Duckworth said, “I went on the North Carolina General Statutes, and there needed to be 449 signatures or at least 35%, according to the General Statues.”

The two questions have been on the ballot for the Town of Bladenboro residents twice before over the past 25 years. Both times the issue was voted down.

The mayor says he believes in the citizens’ right to vote and the town will have to wait and see how the vote turns out.

To add to the drama in this year’s election in Bladenboro there are four new candidates running for the three open town commissioner seats.

Commissioners up for re-election are Gene Norton, Patsi Callihan and Sara Jane Benson. The four other candidates on the ballot are John (Mac) Bowen, Claudette Lewis Guy, Stephanie A. Thurman and Joey Todd are the four new

A voter may vote for three candidates, one for each seat up for election.
